An Educator and International Sports Administrator Who Conveyed the Spirit of Kangdukwon to the World

The growth of Taekwondo into a martial art practiced by people around the world today and an official Olympic sport was made possible by the dedication of countless pioneers. Among them, President Hwa Chong is an indispensable figure in the history of Taekwondo’s development in the United States.

Born on February 28, 1939, President Hwa Chong learned the fundamentals of Taekwondo and the martial arts spirit under the guidance of Masters Park Chul-hee and Hong Jong-pyo at Gangdeokwon, a traditional dojo from the early days of Korean Taekwondo. While training at Gangdeokwon in the mid-1950s, he internalized an educational philosophy that prioritized character over technique, and this spirit became the foundation of his life and coaching philosophy throughout his life.

Chairman Hwa Chong moved to the United States in 1967. While pursuing a master’s degree in economics at Michigan State University, he was invited to serve as a leader for the University of Michigan Taekwondo Club, where he began to actively promote Taekwondo within the American university community. Since 1968, he served as the head instructor of the University of Michigan Taekwondo Club, training countless students and instructors over several decades. It is said that his passion for education was so extraordinary that he traveled back and forth from Lansing to Ann Arbor every week to provide instruction in person.

Chairman Hwa Chong understood Taekwondo not merely as a sport, but as a means of character education. In his classes, etiquette, discipline, responsibility, and a spirit of service were emphasized just as much as kicks and forms. This educational philosophy served as the foundation for the University of Michigan Taekwondo Club to grow into a representative model of American collegiate Taekwondo, and this tradition continues to this day.

His achievements as an educator led to the production of world-class athletes. His student, Lynette Love, won a gold medal in the women’s heavyweight demonstration event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, while Han Won Lee won a bronze medal in the men’s bantamweight event. This is considered a prime example demonstrating that President Hwa Chong’s systematic leadership and educational philosophy were recognized on the world stage.

President Hwa Chong’s activities were not limited to the field of education. Starting in the 1970s, he played a central role in U.S. Taekwondo administration, serving as President of the Michigan Taekwondo Association and Vice Chairman of the AAU Taekwondo Committee, and was deeply involved in the management of the U.S. national team. He led the U.S. delegation as the team manager for the Taekwondo demonstration event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, making a significant contribution to enhancing the international competitiveness of U.S. Taekwondo. President Hwa Chong, who served as the President of the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) from 1993 to 1996, made significant contributions to the administrative development of U.S. Taekwondo and the enhancement of its international standing. During the same period, he served as an Executive Committee member of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and a director of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), playing a crucial role as a bridge connecting the United States and global Taekwondo.

His leadership shone even brighter at the 11th World Taekwondo Championships held at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1993. As the first World Championships held in the United States, it was one of the largest international tournaments of its time, with 669 athletes from 83 countries participating, and served as a significant opportunity to raise the profile of U.S. Taekwondo to the world. As the President of the USU, President Hwa Chong dedicated himself to the successful hosting of the tournament and contributed greatly to elevating Taekwondo’s international status.

In November 2015, President Hwa Chong took on the role of shouldering the traditions of Kangdukwon from Grand Master Park Chul-hee, a co-founder of the school. Since then, through the World Kangdukwon Federation, he has been striving for the development and preservation of traditions alongside his disciples from around the world, inheriting the history and spirit of Kangdukwon. This adds significance not only to his contributions to the development of Taekwondo in the United States but also to his role as a leader carrying on the lineage of traditional Korean martial arts.

Those who know President Hwa Chong consistently speak of his gentle nature and keen insight. He was a leader who prioritized trust over authority, harmony over competition, and character over technique. Rather than boasting of his own dazzling achievements, he found greater fulfillment in encouraging his juniors and nurturing his disciples, dedicating his entire life to raising people through Taekwondo.

While global Taekwondo has achieved remarkable growth today, its foundation lay in the pioneers who silently sowed the seeds of Taekwondo overseas. President Hwa Chong is a representative figure among them. He instilled the spirit of Kangdukwon in American academia and contributed to the globalization of Taekwondo through education, administration, and international sports diplomacy.

His life is not merely a success story of an individual, but a scene in the history of Korean Taekwondo’s growth into a martial art for the world; it will be remembered for a long time to come within the history of Taekwondo’s development in the United States and in the history of world Taekwondo.

미국 태권도의 큰 스승, 정화(鄭和)

-강덕원의 정신을 세계에 전한 교육자이자 국제 스포츠 행정가

태권도가 오늘날 세계인이 함께 수련하는 무도이자 올림픽 정식종목으로 성장하기까지는 수많은 선구자들의 헌신이 있었다. 그 가운데 미국 태권도 발전사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 인물이 바로 정화(鄭和, Hwa Chong) 회장이다.

정화 회장은 1939년 2월 28일 태어나 대한민국 태권도 초창기의 전통관인 강덕원(講德院)​에서 박철희·홍종표 사범의 지도를 받으며 태권도의 기본과 무도정신을 익혔다. 그는 1950년대 중반 강덕원에서 수련하며 기술보다 인격을 중시하는 교육철학을 몸에 익혔고 이 정신은 평생 그의 삶과 지도철학의 근간이 되었다.

1967년 미국으로 건너간 정화 회장은 미시간주립대학교에서 경제학 석사과정을 밟는 한편, 미시간대학교 태권도클럽의 지도자로 초청받아 미국 대학사회에 태권도를 본격적으로 보급하기 시작했다. 이후 1968년부터 미시간대학교 태권도클럽의 책임지도자로 활동하며 수십 년 동안 수많은 학생과 지도자를 길러냈다. 당시 그는 매주 랜싱에서 앤아버까지 왕복하며 직접 지도를 이어갈 만큼 교육에 대한 열정이 남달랐다고 전해진다.

정화 회장은 태권도를 단순한 스포츠가 아닌 인격교육의 수단으로 이해했다. 그의 수업에서는 발차기와 품새 못지않게 예의와 절제, 책임감과 봉사의 정신이 강조되었다. 이러한 교육철학은 미시간대학교 태권도클럽을 미국 대학 태권도의 대표적인 모델로 성장시키는 밑거름이 되었으며 오늘날까지도 그 전통은 이어지고 있다.

교육자로서의 성과는 세계 정상급 선수 배출로 이어졌다. 그의 제자인 리네트 러브(Lynette Love)​는 1988년 서울올림픽 태권도 시범종목 여자 헤비급에서 금메달을 획득했고 이한원(Han Won Lee)​은 남자 밴텀급에서 동메달을 차지하였다. 이는 정화 회장의 체계적인 지도력과 교육철학이 세계 무대에서도 인정받았음을 보여주는 대표적인 사례로 평가된다.

정화 회장의 활동은 교육 현장에만 머물지 않았다. 그는 1970년대부터 미국 태권도 행정의 중심에서 활약하며 미시간태권도협회 회장, 미국 AAU 태권도위원회 부위원장 등을 역임했고 미국 국가대표팀 운영에도 깊이 참여하였다. 1988년 서울올림픽 태권도 시범종목에서는 미국 대표팀 단장으로 선수단을 이끌었으며 미국 태권도의 국제 경쟁력 향상에 크게 기여하였다.

1993년부터 1996년까지는 미국태권도협회(USTU, United States Taekwondo Union) 회장을 역임한 정화 회장은 미국 태권도의 행정 발전과 국제적 위상 제고에 크게 기여하였다. 같은 시기 세계태권도연맹(WTF) 집행위원과 미국올림픽위원회(USOC) 이사로 활동하며 미국과 세계 태권도를 연결하는 중요한 가교 역할을 수행하였다.

그의 리더십은 1993년 뉴욕 메디슨 스퀘어 가든에서 열린 제11회 세계태권도선수권대회에서 더욱 빛을 발했다. 미국에서 처음 열린 세계선수권대회는 83개국 669명의 선수가 참가한 당시 최대 규모의 국제대회 가운데 하나였으며 미국 태권도의 위상을 세계에 알리는 중요한 계기가 되었다. 정화 회장은 미국태권도연맹 회장으로서 대회의 성공적인 개최를 위해 헌신하였고, 태권도의 국제적 위상을 높이는 데 크게 기여하였다.

2015년 11월 강덕원 공동 창설자인 박철희 대사범으로부터 강덕원의 전통을 이어갈 역할을 맡은 정화 회장은 이후 세계강덕원연맹(World Kangdukwon Federation)을 통해 강덕원의 역사와 정신을 계승하며 세계 각국의 제자들과 함께 발전과 전통 보존을 위해 노력하고 있다. 이는 미국 태권도 발전에 대한 그의 공헌뿐 아니라 대한민국 전통 무도의 계보를 이어가는 지도자로서의 의미를 더하고 있다.

정화 회장을 아는 사람들은 한결같이 그의 온화한 성품과 예리한 통찰력을 이야기한다. 그는 권위보다 신뢰를, 경쟁보다 화합을, 기술보다 인격을 앞세운 지도자였다. 화려한 업적을 자랑하기보다 후배를 격려하고 제자를 성장시키는 데 더 큰 보람을 찾았으며 평생 태권도를 통해 사람을 키우는 일에 헌신하였다.

오늘날 세계 태권도는 눈부신 성장을 이루었지만 그 기반에는 해외에서 묵묵히 태권도의 씨앗을 뿌린 선구자들이 있었다. 정화 회장은 그 대표적인 인물이다. 그는 강덕원의 정신을 미국 대학 사회에 심었고 교육과 행정, 국제 스포츠 외교를 통해 태권도의 세계화에 기여하였다.

그의 삶은 한 개인의 성공담이 아니라, 대한민국 태권도가 세계인의 무도로 성장해 온 역사의 한 장면이며 앞으로도 미국 태권도 발전사와 세계 태권도사 속에서 오래도록 기억될 것이다.
